Giving Wheels was setup by us (Patrick Anderson & Olivia Leigh) as part of our efforts to raise money while at the same time riding our bikes. It is also the center of our charity efforts of the company we co-founded, Zealology. Giving Wheels is not a non-profit organization, but all of our proceeds generated here are contributed to charities.
At this time, the two charities we have chosen are the Challenged Atheletes Foundation and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. These are two great charities and we have personal connections with each of these causes.
I first became involved with Team in Training (TNT) and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) in 2011. My dad was diagnosed with leukemia in 2006. After undergoing chemotherapy, it went until remission. Unfortunately, his cancer came back the next year. My dad lost his struggle with leukemia on October 2nd, 2007.
In 2011, when I signed up for a Team in Training century ride (100 miles on a bike), he had a huge impact on me. I met so many people that had loved ones affected by a blood cancer. We also had survivors that biked along with us every single mile. We were all committed to raising money to help LLS fight these cancers.
Since then, I have done several more events with TNT and I continue to raise money for LLS. I hope you will join me at an event or make a donation to this worthy organization.
I participated in my first Challenged Athelete’s Foundation (CAF) event in 2015. It was the Tour de Cove, a 4 1/2 spin-a-thon that is a part of of CAF’s annual weekend of sports events and celebrations of challenged athletes.
I wanted to participate and raise money for this cause because of the help they have given me – a more active prosthetic foot and a recumbent trike.
The foot has allowed me to lead a more active life and to even do things like CrossFit and the Warrior Dash. And the trike let’s me enjoy summer bike rides and participate in bike events.
I’ve done a couple more Tour de Coves since then and have been joined by my husband, my sister, and even my 10 year old nephew. We are all driven to help CAF because everyone deserves to lead an active life.
